Imaging Pain, Body and Being a project carried out at the Whittington Hospital, London. In the context of the abundance of images of pain, mutilation, torture in the history of painting, Boyd’s focus lay in the paradoxical beauty of diseased human tissue. Such images of nature seen in MRI or CAT scans have a power and fascination, making explicit the pathos in the relationship between the human body to the human being. Boyd began by exploring the properties of medical imagery to discover how it expresses yet confuses the identity of the body. This work Body and Being includes an MRI of diseased tissue which is multiplied endlessly by means of the totally mirrored installation.
