Jane Boyd was appointed Leverhulme Trust Artist in Residence at the Warburg Institute, University of London in 2000. Here she made a transcription of Las Meninas 1656 by Diego Velázquez in the form of a light-based installation in the main lecture theatre home to enumerable papers on the work of Velázquez. This painting poses intriguing questions and consequently has enduring presence in contemporary art and literature. This installation incorporates the text by Leonardo da Vinci Come lo specchio e il maestro de pittori (how painting is the master of painters) which has been transcribed by his student and assistant Francesco Melzi from Leonardo’s mirror handwriting
