“The significance of the CNIT Building for me is also found in the roof or dome. Designed in 1958 by the engineer Nicolas Esquillan, it is the largest single span of reinforced concrete – at least in Europe if not the world. Exactly half a century ago, Esquillan studied the geometric principles found in the egg shell and sea shells to calculate the feasibility of producing this roof of reinforced concrete. Glass appears to lift the building from the ground so that the white corrugated roof seems to hover just above the esplanade.”
