Jane Boyd was Leverhulme Trust Artist in Residence at the Warburg Institute, University of London in 2000, Among the works she produced was a transcription of Las Meninas 1656 by Diego Velázquez in the form of a light-based installation in the main lecture theatre home to enumerable papers on the work of Velázquez. Jane Boyd is intrigued by the questions this painting poses and consequently its enduring presence in contemporary art and literature. This installation incorporates the text by Leonardo da Vinci “Come lo specchio e il maestro de pittori” (how painting is the master of painters) which in turn is the transcription by his student and assistant Francesco Melzi of Leonardo’s mirror handwriting
